<\/a><\/p>\n Now that Merriam-Webster has officially proclaimed that \u2018ginormous\u2019 is a word, I have even less regard for their dictionary. \u00a0 ‘Ginormous’ is a horrible debacle as far as my ears are concerned. It also makes me think of \u2018vagina,\u2019 but I know I am overly sensitive to the V word. I don\u2019t even like girls named Regina.<\/p>\n Anyway, what next, \u2018kajillion<\/a>?\u2019 That one bothers me as well, but \u2018eleventy billion\u2019 is okay, because it\u2019s so cute.<\/p>\n Allan Metcalf, a professor of English at MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Ill., and the executive secretary of the American Dialect Society, doesn\u2019t like \u2018ginormous.\u2019 Here\u2019s<\/a> what he said about it:<\/p>\n “A new word that stands out and is ostentatious is going to sink like a lead balloon,” he said. “It might enjoy a fringe existence.”<\/em><\/p>\n Isn\u2019t that an awful sentence?! \u00a0 Why is this guy on the board of the American Dialect Society?
