Women who&nbsp;\u00a0refer to themselves as&nbsp;\u00a0\u201cactors\u201d seem much sillier than they need to be.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re an actress but you find that term denigrating, doesn\u2019t that mean you feel inferior to a male in the same profession? Why don\u2019t actresses just insist that men call themselves &#8220;actresses&#8221; too?<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m wondering whether anyone considers herself a \u2018waitress\u2019 anymore. There is a recent, critically acclaimed movie called \u201cWaitress,\u201d right? And you know why it wasn\u2019t called \u201cWaiter?\u201d Because the eponymous person is a goddamned female, that\u2019s why!<\/p>\n<p>I see from a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=r2IsVOmNqGkC&amp;pg=PA311&amp;lpg=PA311&amp;dq=removing+gender+from+words&amp;source=web&amp;ots=xpaKnrFFNw&amp;sig=mC79VH4fyh0Hf5Az7I_HYa4MRjc#PPA312,M1\">list<\/a> of suggested gender-neutral words that \u201chostess\u201d and \u201cheiress\u201d are not okay, and neither is \u201cbondsman.\u201d This is too much bad news for me to take. It is very, very upsetting. You\u2019re not even supposed to say \u201cbachelor\u2019s degree!\u201d I can only assume that \u201cdominatrix\u201d is out, as well. One would need to call a \u201cdominator\u201d instead, and who really wants that?<\/p>\n<p>Ugh! I plan to continue calling actresses \u201cactresses\u201d, and to be polite to busboys and handymen.
