I’ve been looking for Max’s list of the bands he hated and I finally found it. He sent it in a comment to a post I’d written about stuff I love. How Maxlike of him! Here’s his comment with the list:
Getting back to hatred for a minute, i coincidentally just compiled my own list of classic rock bands I hate. Before making this list, I thought of myself as a classic rock lover (Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Love, Doors, Velvets, Beach Boys, David Bowie, Neil Young, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, etc.) But now I am not so sure. I wouldn’t mind if the work of these “artists” was erased from existence:

jethro tull

A great list I think, very exhaustive. I’m on board with all of them. But as I read the list with a friend, I realized a glaring omission: What about Kiss?!?!?!?!?! Is it because he didn’t consider them a classic rock band but more Metal?? I think it’s just an oversight that would make him smack his head in dismay. The first question I’ll ask him when we meet among the stars out in the cosmos will be: “What about Kiss?!”
I love lists and Max did too. My husband won’t have anything to do with lists. It’s the one thing I would change about him.
I hate so many bands whose names I don’t know that I’ve stopped listening to the radio. I hate the Strokes, for example. I hate every female singer/songwriter who sounds like Dido, so I just call them all Dido. I hate all music with that auto tune thing. I hate every new band I see on the David Letterman show. I hate bands with frantic overactive front-men, or guitar players with funny hats. I hate that guy Bruno Mars. I hate whatshername, the one whose boyfriend punched her in the face.
But I’m going to list my all-time favorite records and then I expect you to do the same.
Astral Weeks – Van Morrison
Forever Changes – Love
The Band – The Band
Burt Jansch – Burt Jansch
Grievous Angel – Gram Parsons
After these five, it would be too hard to choose. I’d have to do a Top 50 and who needs that?
Okay, your turn.
I don’t agree with all of them for myself, but Max’s list still makes me laugh. I don’t think I could ever limit myself even to five top albums, but I love each of these (I made it a bakers five).
Blue – Joni Mitchell
Number of the Beast – Iron Maiden
After the Goldrush – Neil Young
Get Born – JET
The Kick Inside – Kate Bush
Years of Refusal – Morrissey
This my list , but the caveat is that the list doesn’t really exist, because I can never make my mind up about these sorts of things. I change my list depending on my mood of the moment. The one constant for the last twenty years is this one:
Blue Lines – Massive Attack
Sister, like u it is hard to pick just five. Skye my preferences also shift according to mood or circumstance. I am confident the following would remain in my top ten rain or shine.
In no particular order
Neil Young – Harvest Moon
Tom Waits- Rain Dogs
Janis Joplin- Pearl
Nick Cave and the Bad Seed-Henry’s Dream
Captain Beefheart- Safe as milk
A very big nod of approval goes to your Gram Parsons inclusion, Grievous Angel very nearly made this list.
Hated bands? I’m not sure – but I stend to stay clear of manufactored modern pop.
But for me, one of the most beautiful songs is ‘Gabriel’ by Lamb – it manages to capture the beauty and sadness of life in its entirety. Beth Jeans Houghton has created some wonderful songs too. Oh and I find Kate Bush’s ‘Ariel’ album stunning.
Controversial!
China Doll – Julian Cope is up there in my tops, but since I’m currently mainlining The Lonely Island to cheer me up at work I can’t think!
I’ll be back.
PS Roz, yes. Kate Bush is the boss. Are we excited about Stevie Nick’s new album?
And sadly, I frickin’ love Peter Gabriel and Genesis. I’ll leave now.
Pixies- Doolittle
Neil Young- after the goldrush
Bjork- Homogenic
My bloody valentine- loveless
The cure- disintegration
Kate bush- hounds of love
I like lots of newer music too, but these are ones are special because they have nostalgia mixed in.
I HATE fucking Mumford and Sons and Coldplay. The world would be better off without them.
I agree with Max’s list, except I have secret loyalty and love for U2. I’m sorry! But New Years Day? One of the greatest songs ever. And I love goofy Bono. He’s a good person.
I also love lists, so much so that I’m doing this blog meme thingy that’s all lists for ten days, but I have a really hard time choosing favorites. So without overthinking it:
No Control – Bad Religion
Rites of Passage – Indigo Girls
Guilty as Charged – Cock Sparrer
The Grass is Blue – Dolly Parton
Pussy Whipped – Bikini Kill
I agree with 93% of Max’s list.. but The Who? ..especially before they tried our patience with Tommy? They made half a hundred great pop songs.. and Santana? Seriously? The first 4 albums are unique and worthy of worship. As for the Allman Brothers, you don’t need to listen to their 40 minute jams, the rest of their stuff is magnificent. But I agree that the Dead are the most over-rated band in history and a snooze. Long Live Arthur Lee.. and Bert’s Black Water Side is sheer magic.
A couple of notes before we elect the new pope. “Records” and “Albums” are outdated concepts. Kind of like when a young(er) person says can I see your photos, they don’t expect the other person to open a drawer and pull out a big square book that looks like it’s used for scrapbooking. Also there was a golden age of albums (probably 60’s though 80’s 90’s) and due to delivery systems (45’s, 78’s, digital downloads, etc.) and genres many a great artist didn’t make their music with the album in mind. For example some great Motown artists had some great singles that ended up on albums with a lot of filler until Stevie and Marvin (What’s Goin’ On) started to conceive their ideas in album form. As has been mentioned, it kind of depends on the mood, and where do you stop…
Pet Sounds-Beach Boys
The Doors S/T
Midnight Blue-Kenny Burrell
Aja-Steely Dan
Bring It All Back Home-Bob Dylan
My sister and I are list crazy as well. I like a lot of cheesy bands, and I don’t mind admitting that. I also could listen to Alice’s restaurant by Arlo Gunthrie (which isn’t even really music) for hours.
I like: Fever Ray and such
I don’t like: the radio
Also agree with most of Max’s list, but probably could find one song from each band that I don’t mind. But just one.
That list is amazing! Though I would disagree with a few of them (I fucking love The Who!!)
& do you know how happy I am that one of your all time fave records is The Band’s “The Band”?! I love them to just an unhealthy degree. I got the biography written by Levon Helm and it’s hilarious, particularly the stuff about the days when they toured with Ronnie Hawkins.
So here are some of my favourites, in no special order:
Against Me! – As the Eternal Cowboy
The Band – The Band
Bruce Springsteen – Nebraska
Elvis Costello & the Attractions – Get Happy!
The Smiths – The Queen is Dead
I could write you a list the size of Wales of bands I hate, but I think this band (and this song especially) is the crowning turd of that particular shit heap ->
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTdBVXE7gGI – watch the video and tell me you don’t want to gouge your own eyes out at the horror. This plays at work almost EVERY DAY.
Do soundtracks count as records, if they were specially composed for a TV show/movie?
Yay lists!
My list in no particular order–and 5 is too short for me:
Devo: Freedom of Choice
Eurythmics: 1984
Kraftwerk: Any
Stones: Aftermath
The Jam: This is the Modern World
Miles Davis: Kinda Blue
Coltrane: Blue Train
Dum Dum Girls: I Will Be
Foals: Antidotes
Anything by Lowfish
If the list were longer it might include Devendra Banhardt, Donovan, Underground Resistance, The Liars, Broadcast and Camera Obscura.
RedHeadFashionista – I do love Kate Bush’s music. Listened to ‘Hounds of Love’ pretty much on repeat while I was recovering from surgery, and then went on to ‘The Kick Inside’. Afraid I don’t listen to Stevie Nicks, but I just looked up her soon to be released album. Any song called ‘Wide Saragasso Sea’ gets a thumbs up from me.
I chuckled when I read about your first question to Max. I can almost hear you! (Even though I’ve never met you.)
I hate the girl who got busted in the face too. It seems like she’s in every song on the radio and they all sound exactly the same. Terrible!
Ohhhh. This post makes me happy. Thank you for the time travel back to the earlier post in March 2010. I love lists too and Max’s list is very comprehensive. I have to believe he felt KISS was metal and not classic rock. Please somehow find a way to let me know when you find out.
Below please find 5 of my favorite albums, in no particular order. There are so many more, but these are the first 5 that came to mind.
Dave Matthews Band – Before These Crowded Streets
Gorillaz – Demon Days
Alice in Chains – Jar of Flies
The Who – Quadrophenia (Sorry, SW and Max)
Bela Fleck & Edgar Meyer – Music for Two
Van Morrison’s Astral is certainly among my top 10. And for the record, Steely Dan is the worst band of all time.
Sam Cooke Life at the Harlem Square Club
Amancio D’Silva Integration
Legalize it Peter Tosh
Inflammable Material Stiff Little Fingers
Lists give me panic attacks. I like the idea of them, but then I start them and it’s not long before I feel the elephant settling down on my chest. As it is, Bowie needs to be on my list. But I couldn’t even choose my top 5 Bowie albums, let alone 1! I can’t even do top 5 artists. Though I could do two. Davids both, Bowie and Sylvian. Let’s just leave it at that.
I will agree that KISS was definitely a huge thing to leave out, but maybe he was thinking it was SO obvious, it didn’t even need to be mentioned?
Sorry to say though, I can’t agree with everything on his list – there’s some Peter Gabriel I absolutely love. Actually, there are some songs by several of those bands that I really love. And I hope you can forgive me, but I cannot stand the Band! (I’m sorry!)
Hahaha! I’ve been to at least 10 concerts of the bands in his list in the last 3 years…I guess that’s what happens when the bands just decide to tour South America 20 years after their biggest success.
Greetings from the 3rd. World :D!
I can’t decide on the other three right now, but I’d definitely have Forever Changes and Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On in my top 5.
First thing I thought as I read through Max’s list was, if these bands were erased from existence, what will strippers dance to? Then: I’m going to miss ZZTop.
Ah Sister Wolf, I don’t know why but I never would have imagined you being a fan of Love. I don’t even know that many people who know Love. Maybe bigger in the states than in the UK? That album is so great! Have “loved” it for years.
Joni Mitchell – Blue (Top album of everness for me)
Neil Young – Harvest Moon
Rolling Stones – Aftermath
The Knife – Deep Cuts
Pulp – Different Class
These are the only ones I can truly commit to, Leonard Cohen, The Smiths and Kraftwerk should feature in there somewhere but I can’t commit to a particular album.
I love lists. There’s nothing quite as sickening as people who don’t have a strong enough opinion on anything to compile a list about it. Along with love/hate/top ten lists I’m quite partial to a long to-do list. My guilty secret is that I love lists so much that sometimes I write lists and include stuff that I’ve done already just so that I can have that satisfaction of ticking them off and trying to convince myself that I’m organised. Yes I should get out more…
Favorites are easy…
Echo and the Bunnymen “Ocean Rain”
Siouxsie and the Banshees “Peepshow” (sentimental)
Bob Mould “Workbook”
Portishead “Live”
White Stripes “White Blood Cells”
Afghan Whigs “Gentlemen”
NIN “The fragile”
I loathe Tori Amos, Nickelback and anything described as “nu”
And I feel I must defend Peter Gabriel and Genesis, and U2. But, variety packs are the spice racks of life!
Maura – Workbook is great, it would be in my top 50 for sure. It makes me happy that Frank Black was a big fan of Husker Du.
Girl Can’t Talk – Yes to Aftermath. It might be my favorite Stones album. And Leonard Cohen Songs from a Room might mae it into my top 10.
Tricia – Hahahahahahahahahhahahaha! Can’t the stripper dance to Prince?
Patricia – I’m glad you’re here to represent South America!
Honeypants – Your devotion to David Bowie gives you a pass to hate the Band.
Patni – We love Sam Cooke in our house.
Ann – I love you even more today. Steely Dan is the worst. They should play it to torture Al Kaida or whoever they like to torture. How do they get their sound to be so uniquely and piercingly awful? Can we start a zine about hating them? This was my idea around 25 years ago but it’s not too late, right??
Roz – I play Hounds of Love when I’m driving and early Stevie Knicks is a guilty pleasure.
DCD – She looks like she’s rather be a prostitute than a singer and that’s fine with me.
Cat- Wow! You area so jazzy and eclectic!
Dru – I think they count, yep.
Siobhan – Get Happy is in my top ten. And I once said “Hi!” to Rick Danko, which was very exciting. I will look at the video when I feel strong enough.
Liz – My teenager just went to see Arlo Guthrie!
Mr. San Pedro – Spoken like a man. Pet sounds would be my number 6. Or a tie with Grievous Angel. I love you so much. You are my pope.
Dexter – I like plenty of Who songs. Max always felt they were a “B list band” for some reason.
Marlena – I love Dolly Parton. I have a close friend who can sing Jolene with such feeling that it gives me chills.
annemarie – PIXIES FOREVER. God bless them. And that Mumford band should die just for the name. Coldplay is a parody of itself, hate them in a big way.
ReheadFashionista- Okay, come back when the drugs have worn off. xo
RO – Big props for Safe as Milk! Harvest Moon, of course, a wonderful record. We just recently saw Neil Young reunited with Buffalo Springfield and he was awesome.
Skye – I don’t even know Massive Attack. I thought it was a band for dancing when you’re on Ecstasy?
PennyDreadfulVintage – Oh my god, Maiden. Max used to play them all the time when he was a young teen. I had a mad crush on Bruce Dickenson.
Aw, Earth Wind & Fire? Well, specifically “September” – I learned how to skate backwards to that (and knock down everybody in the rink) and the Temptations’ “Power.” Since I was trained as a classical musician type and that & opera make up 80% of my listening, next being jazz (all types, eras), R&B, soul, classic Motown, etc., I’m way ignorant when it comes to current. Of what I know, I pretty much agree with Max’s list.
Ancient: I was always a big Kinks fan – do they count?
It’s great to see mention of Miles and Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke (yodeling auto-tuned pop singers need to listen to his melisma, a lot) – my favorite SC album is “Nightbeat.” I always liked Kraftwerk too. And love Stevie Nicks.
Great post, as usual, SW.
What a list! I wasted two thirds of my English A-Level exam in a kind of trance, trying to decide on my 8 Desert Island Discs.
I tried to see what the unifying factor in Max’s list was, as they were each and every one such perfect and coherent choices* Without wishing to sound pretentious (too late!) I think of Dylan etc as genuine artists. I would say the people on Max’s list might think they’re making art, but they’re mistaken.
My own list:
Blue by Joni, of course
Blood on The Tracks, Mr Bobby Dylan
Pet Sounds, The Beach Boys
Double Fantasy, John and Yoko (I realise I might be alone on this one)
Paul SImon, Paul SImon
*Sorry though, I love a bit of Carole King.
Oh my, I can’t believe you don’t know Massive Attack!!
You must know this –
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWmrfgj0MZI
or this?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7K72X4eo_s
My Top 5
Stevie Wonder – Songs in the Key of Life
Kate Bush – Never For Ever (though, I love everything before, and including, The Hounds of Love.)
Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On
Goldfrapp – Felt Mountain
Cocteau Twins – Victorialand
The first 3 I’m certain of. My love for them is sincere and emotional. The last two I love with the same love as many other albums. But this is off the top of my head. I’m sure I’ll kick myself later.
Right now I’m listening to Beth Gibbons (Portishead) & Rustin Man – Out of Season. It’s beautiful but I only ever play it from track 4 onwards. Not sure why.
Yes!!! Sister, anything that can be deemed “Dido” should be pissed on and burnt for the sake of humanity.
My respect for Max just went up a hundred fold when I saw that the top band on his list was the Grateful Dead. How I HATE THEM. I also hate all those horrible bands with the overly-emotional lead singers who sound like they’re straining to take a dump — Nickleback in particular might be the worst band of all time, tied with Creed. Just typing the names is making my teeth clench with rage.
I’m not sure I can make a list. I’m a music fiend; I have an absurd amount of music on my iPod and my favorites change all the time. I know I often vehemently disagree with most of the selections on those Top 100 of All Time lists though; I mean really, after all this time it’s still the same fucking Bob Dylan record making #1? Those lists never change; it’s like music stopped being made after the 60’s, and even before then it was apparently only made in the US and England. I hate Bob Dylan too, by the way.
I like that other commenters mentioned Bjork, The Knife, and Fever Ray. They might make my list, at least if I made it this week. My list would also include a lot of non-English language music like Seu Jorge, and Llasa de Sela, because I think most song lyrics are banal and it’s better if I can’t understand them.
Hahaa, that list is wonderful. I love that he wrote it out.
Yeaaaah Bert! I love him with the Pentangle especially. & Astral Weeks is a perfect album, as is Forever Changes.
Doolittle by the Pixies blew my mind and turned me on to so much great music. It’s hard to think of favorite albums because there are definitely times for certain albums. Recently I’ve been playing More Fun in the New World by X over and over, as well as all three LPs by Fucked Up. Time Fades Away and Zuma by Neil Young are also particularly special to me. In On the Killtaker by Fugazi was amazing to find at 16 and I think I love it even more now. Double Nickles on the Dime by the Minutemen, Damaged by Black Flag, and Paganicons by Saccharine Trust are others. And then, more tuneful, I absolutely adore the Go-Betweens. Before Hollywood and Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express, especially. & The Smiths, too, but of course!
My favorite song of all time has got to be “Golden brown” by the Stranglers. Hugh Cornwall’s such an ass but whatever, great musician.
Ok, here goes, then, can some kind person please nuke the entire output of Dire Straits too, since I don’t see them on anyone’s shit list and I cannot stand them.
As for what I love and need in my ears (five is too few!), here goes:
Bear McCreary – Battlestar Galactica OST, Season 1-4 (that’s really four records, but they all feel like one monumental work, and I’m not just saying this because I loved the show)
The Beatles – Abbey Road
Ennio Morricone – For A Few Dollars More OST (the title track is the first ever piece of music I fell in love with, circa age 7 or so)
Portishead – Dummy
Oasis – Definitely Maybe
Joe Hisaishi – Spirited Away OST
Yann Tiersen – Amélie OST
Wu-Tang Clan – Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
Joy Division – Unknown Pleasures
Air – Talkie Walkie
I have a large soft corner for soundtracks and scores, which doesn’t seem to be how normal people get into music (the OSTs for Kill Bill, Great Expectations and some other movies are off the list because they weren’t all-original compositions, even though I love them to bits).
Though all this could also be because I seem to like music that doesn’t involve words, and rarely pay attention to lyrics, like a total philistine.
Agreed with all who love soundtracks. In no particular order:
Prokofiev — score to Romeo & Juliet
Carl Orff’s Schulwerk as used in Badlands/True Romance
Aimee Mann — soundtrack to Magnolia
Baz Luhrmann — soundtrack to Romeo + Juliet
Baz Luhrmann — soundtrack to Moulin Rouge!
Outside the soundtrack realm (more than 5, sorry):
Portishead — Dummy
Radiohead — OK Computer
PJ Harvey — Dry
The Pixies — Surfer Rosa
The Riverboat Gamblers — To The Confusion of Our Enemies
The Lawrence Arms — Oh, Calcutta!
Based on the above, perhaps I just love the soundtrack to star-crossed love? And I’m clearly just another woman re-living her 1990s adolescence.
Sarah McLachlan – Fumbling Toward Ecstacy
Oasis – (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?
Sade – Lovers Rock
Bob Marley – Songs of Freedom
R.E.M. – Out of Time
I wanted to put Madonna’s album “Ray of Light” on the list….but I know that would make me a bad person.

“Yes!!! Sister, anything that can be deemed “Dido” should be pissed on and burnt for the sake of humanity.”
THIS 😀
And Jaimi- good call on Golden Brown. It is transcendental!
(sorry to post twice on the thread- i am a music junkie)
Seems we can all agree on “Golden Brown.” And how on earth did I leave out Neil Young’s Harvest Moon?!?! This post could go on for days.
I hate all those bands too, Max is 100% right. Classic rock mostly sucks. (Okay, Deep Purple are funny, but I don’t listen to them.)
Five albums? it’s difficult but,
Helium “the Dirt of Luck”
PJ Harvey “Rid of Me”
The Knife “Silent Shout”
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds “Your Funeral, My Trial”
Low “The Great Destroyer”
Dum Dum Girls rule. My favorite Fugazi is “Steady Diet of Nothing.” I also really love Nina Simone, Curtis Mayfield, Bob Dylan..
I absolutely loathe The Strokes. The one and ONLY band that I hate more would definitely have to be Kings of Leon. Hate everything about them.
Sister- I was so happy Max had meatloaf on his list, terrible music and the man just irks me.
Girl Can’t Talk- agree with you on Leonard Cohen. He should be on my list but deciding on an album, too hard. I love them all and including greatest hits would be tacky. Johnny Cash also falls into the same basket very much deserving of my list but which album?
Thrifty Store Lawyer- I love the Soundtrack to Magnolia have it on my ipod. What a brilliant soundtrack for a brilliant film. I hate Tom Cruise and love to hate him in that movie.
To the many brave people who already admitted to Kate Bush I salute u (guilty pleasure). Have you seen Noel Fielding’s (mighty boosh) rendition of wuthering heights he did for dancing for charity? If not youtube it. Amazing!
The Guess Who are valuable to me
I am right now obsessed with Disraeli Gears – Cream. Also love Radiohead – Kid A but really everything. The standard old albums – Pink Floyd – Dark Side Of The Moon. Rolling Stones – Let It Bleed. Also love pretty much everything by them. The beatles . So highly rated, you would think they would have to be overrated but they are not, love everything the do. REM – Murmur…grew up on R.E.M. Becausebof my older brother who loved them. The Ramones, listening to their greatest hits – loud and fast. Buzzcocks too.
Led Zeppelin on constant play but especially In Through The Out Door right now.
Fiona Apple, barely ever puts records and maes it worth it. Have tp respect that she doesn’t release music just to do it. Also fucking A yes Nina Simone and David Bowie. For me that is HERO WORSHIP.
Hunky Dory – Oh You Pretty Things
And let I forget – Talking Heads – obviously but David Byrne another stellar human being with the right idea. Also see his collaboration with Brian Eno – Life In The Bush Of Ghosts
Max’s list should be on the school curriculum! I agree with about 95% of it, but why Thin Lizzy or the Cult? They were ace! Anyway, here’s my two cents:
The Doors – Any
Swans – Children of God
Scott Walker – Scott 4
Nico – The Marble Index
Psychic TV – Allegory & Self
Siouxsie & The Banshees – Juju
Nick Cave – The Boatman’s Call
BTW I’d like to suggest a new list where every position is occupied by C*ldpl*y.
I forhot to add – I LOVE Neil Young – Live At Massey Hall…. Holy S he was 23 when he this which is unbelievable to say the least.
I would be easier for me to list classic bands I hate than pick albums. I hate The Who, Dylan, the Stones and Pink Floyd (though I’d listen to individual songs by each of them). I’m also a massive fan of soundtracks, compilations and best ofs, so sue me. I’ve been listening to Motown Chartbusters vol. 3 since I was a little girl, and if I get my way I’ll be listening to it on the day I die. It’s not my favourite album in the world (though it’s up there) but it’s a part of my brain now.
Bravo, Max, Bravo. Not a lot to disagree with there, though I do like me some CSNY.
Top 5, scratch that, 6 in no order and up for change depending on my mood:
Blood on the Tracks (but my love for him is massive and I’m holding off on a full 5 just him)-Dylan
Automatic for the People-REM
Kid A- Radiohead
Sea Change- Beck
Neon Bible-Arcade Fire
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot- Wilco
I love these kinds of lists. My dad and I make them. The other kinds of lists…things to do, grocery shopping, etc….fill me with quiet terror.
Great post.
Sister, some of my favorites are:
Cat Stevens-Tea for the Tillerman(especially My Father because it always makes me cry).
Creedence Clearwater-Revival
Surrealistic Pillow-Jefferson Airplane
The Doors-The Doors
Jimmy Hendrix-Are you Experienced
and who could hate Dylan, his early words were the voice of a generation.
Portishead, Dummy
Joni Mitchell – For The Roses
My Bloody Valentine – Loveless
Crosby, Stills & Nash (sorry Max)- Crosby, Stills & Nash
Air – Moon Safari
This list could change and morph, but at the moment, it stands as it is. The music I can always return to, should I feel so inclined. xo.
