I think cunt is way too nice of a word to use to describe this sick old man. The nut-jobs that believe and continue this crap, are just as bad, if not worse. How can they be so out of touch with reality? Were they sheltered from normal life growing up or are they just so self absorbed, they don’t care about anything except their book of fables and the secrets they keep?
It reminds me of when I see the young Mennonite girls in stores with their mothers, with their long dresses and bun covers on their heads and too many children looking old and tired beyond their years. I just want to take them aside and tell them it doesn’t have to be this way, you can have a real life without these restrictions. It’s all quite sad.
Andra, you may be right. Something is very fishy there.
I will be laughing my head off if they elect the next one from Africa. I’m imagining the rabid Polish bigoted Catholics, which we’ve got an amazingly high number in the last years, not knowing what hit them and screaming that it must be a mistake.
After all these years, they still can’t nail the head assholes. So scandalous.
That’s a serious crime in and of itself.
Oh no, wait. Gay is the real crime.
Ugh.
It infuriates me that he is just going to be allowed to retire and walk away. The abuses of the church have been well documented and everyone is outraged and still nothing is really done. The fact that a former Nazi was chosen to be the leader of this institution speaks volumes about their sensitivity towards others, but why has this bastard not been prosecuted by some outside agency?
Careful dear, your ignorance is showing. Many people were forced to go to Hitler Youth and drafted into the Luftwaffe during the war, it wasn’t by choice. Please stop spreading your misguided hate and educate yourself before you hate Germans for simply being German, otherwise you look like a xenophobic simpleton. Thank you.
Is your picture some of Cattelan’s work? I love him. I saw his exhibition at the Guggenheim.
I was raised a Catholic. I’ve been onto those old bastards since I was eight, when they told me a) I was born a sinner and b) if I wasn’t baptized I’d live forever in Purgatory. That just didn’t make any sense to me.
I’ve thought about becoming ‘un-Catholicised’ but I’m not sure if that’s possible? If it is, I imagine it’s not a straight forward process. Hopefully one day I’ll have the time and motivation to see it through.
I asked my daughter if she knew who Jesus Christ was, she looked surprised and said, ‘Of course I do! He’s a Christmas decoration’.
I think John Paul was a fucking worse pope that this guy Benedict. The polish pope covered all the abuses committed by the clergy for freaking decades; in the meantime he was traveling across the world wearing sombreros. At least this one is giving up the presidency of a rotten institution and not dying with it. But catholics still love their John Paul pope.
Hannah, if that was directed at me, um what? I never said I hated the Pope or anyone else for being German. I said it was insensitive of the Church to select a leader with a past affiliation to the Nazi Party.
Hannah is a rather condescending cunt, but unfortunately correct on the Luftwaffe stuff. My friend’s father grew up in Germany and his parents were more or less forced into that and were deeply ashamed about it the rest of their lives.
The ex-Pope is still an asshole of colossal proportions. It also calls into question the whole “is the Pope Catholic?” shit. Still I have to wonder if it’s better than basically being more than half dead and still attempting to lead The Church like his predecessor. (Also I will never understand the disconnect between being behind life support and yet totally against abortion, birth control, stem cell research, etc).
The Church was interesting to me growing up. My mother bought me a children’s Bible growing up because she was worried that I felt left out since we didn’t attend church and I didn’t go to CCD like my classmates. But I was thrilled I didn’t have to sit through that bullshit! My family members, once quite devout, turned away from the Church for a number of reasons. Most notably the child sex scandals…my grandfathers, father, and stepfather attended churches with priests who liked little boys, and also a big one was a priest telling my grandmother that she was going to hell for divorcing her abusive first husband.
What I do like about the church are the saints and the very pretty iconography. There was definitely some good done, charities and such. But for the most part, I feel like they are no longer relevant, are not capable (or willing) to truly evolve with the times, and should just fuck off and donate their amassed wealth to useful causes.
Jaimi – You are right about Hannah. What’s her fucking problem? I hate this pope in particular for his militant anti-gayness but I hate even the idea of a pope. I hate the Catholic church but like you, I adore the saints and the iconography. I have Virgin Mary’s all over my house. As a heathen I am attracted to the extravagant imagery.
My “fucking problem” is the fact that nasty-talking white American women are calling out a religious person for their old-as-the-hills connections to the Nazi party. As Jaimi eloquently and interestingly pointed out, all German families have ties to Nazi Regime whether they like it or not, and it’s gets tiresome to read people calling others out for that fact. Do I personally believe the Catholic Church is a good institution? Hell no, but as a German-born I think it’s deplorable that people say stupid and ignorant things about someone’s heritage. That’s my problem.
And Jaimi, I’m sorry I sounded “condescending,” but my point was that in her comment Bonnie implies that because the former Pope was affiliated with the Party, this makes him a bad person. She also assumes that because he was a Nazi, he MUST have done some deplorable and inhumane acts which I think is incorrect and won’t go into detail here with accounts, but many soldiers were just following orders, just like many American soldiers do today. Can’t they be considered bad people, just like the Nazis? Certainly from certain political standpoints they can be.
I just really want to know what Sister Wolf’s fucking problem is for being a nasty person and only posting how much people are cunts (which unverifiably she is herself), and then taunting people about their own opinions. Someone certainly has a problem, and it isn’t me!
Ugh, you rightly know what I mean, and you’re trying to twist my words. I mean people had the choice of doing what the Party said and joining, or be sent to concentration camps themselves. Many soldiers didn’t actively participate or even know of the Holocaust and if they did, they were tried as war criminals or whatever. I’m talking about the simple foot soldiers doing other menial tasks.
I’m actually really speechless about your infallible ignorance and stupidity, and yet traipsing under the guise of an intelligent informer. Go read a fucking book, you cunt.
How interesting that the Catholic Church in Poland condones and encourages an ongoing witch hunt for people having anything to do with the Communist Party before the change of the regime. My parents never joined and have my undying respect for that, but many people did under pressure, and they never did anything more than attend a party meeting. So it’s OK to conduct investigations and drag them to court today, but it’s not OK to point out that the Pope was affiliated with a Nazi organization?
The Church’s hypocrisy has no limits.
I love your blog and I’ve been reading it on and off for ages. I also admire your ability to cut srtaight through the crap. So it’s disappointing to see how you dismiss Hannah so swiftly as a holocaust denier. Please read her post properly, She is nothing of the sort – at least – you cannot make that judgement on the basis of her comment. Flinging “cunts” to and fro is helpful to noone and diminishes a serious issue.
Noemi – I did read her letter, and also the one’s I haven’t published in which she just calls me a stupid cunt. I can’t understand why she wants to excuse Ratzinger for anything, given the scope of his wrongdoing. I understand the concept of German Guilt but it’s not a problem I want to deal with.
ok, fair enough, I didn’t realise that there were other unposted comments. Ratzinger has a lot to answer for, particularly regarding the cover up of paedophilia within the Catholic church. The whole bloody Catholic church has a great deal to explain. May I point out though, that the picture (brilliant as it is) is of John Paul and not the Rat.
He sure is a fucking cunt. Criminal old douchebag. It’s insane that the Vatican can get away with this, isn’t it?

Somebody’s blackmailing the old Nazi.

Magdalene Laundries. Google it. Cry

How do you measure which one was better or worse? If all organized religion would disappear tomorrow, the world would be a better place.
Hannah, if that was directed at me, um what? I never said I hated the Pope or anyone else for being German. I said it was insensitive of the Church to select a leader with a past affiliation to the Nazi Party.
Cricket, amen to that.
There’s more to this story than anyone would normally even guess at. I suppose a person needs to be familiar with America’s military:

I know old post but in case cricket returns. Are you really equating communists and nazis??? Nazis are capitalist genocidal racists.
Hail Satan.
