The Shoe Motherlode

Everyone probably knows about this but me. However just in case I’m not alone in my ignorance, there is a Virtual Shoe Museum where you can marvel at weird shoes all day long!

Check out William (Boy) Habraken‘s collection of tribal and ethnographical shoes…the largest in the world.

The Virtual Shoe Museum has a user-friendly data-base that lets you search by material (fur, feathers, plastic, wool, etc) designer, style, etc. Go have some fun!

  2. Sheri says:

    Oh. My. God.
    I’m feeling a little sick.

  3. niki says:

i wouldn’t say i’m all that against animal products, but those horse hoof shoes – BLEUGH!! They make me squeamish. And I don’t doubt there are fetishists who might be discovering your blog now – diversification Ms Wolf!

  4. Desiree says:

Please don’t tell me they are real hooves.

  5. Nickie Frye says:

I did NOT know about this museum. I’m always the last to know. So excited to check it out! I’m a big fan of wacky shoes. 🙂

  6. Jazmin says:

I did not know about this. Ugh. Those hooves make me barf in my mouth. I grew up around horses and that disturbs me to no end. Ugh, I just can’t. Also, i think SoS will want that one covered in toys.

  7. Sister Wolf says:

Sorry about the hooves. I presume they are an Artist’s Statement meant to upset us.

Nickie Frye – Ah then you will LOVE it!

  8. Oh my more reasons for me not to tackle editing and writing my film script!

  9. Sonia Luna says:

I find the ones in the third picture particularly hideous, why would anyone want their feet to resemble a balding gorilla? Gross!

  10. BethUK says:

Oh wow. So much work time will be wasted……… thanks Sister Wolf 😉

Also, have to add my yuck to the hooves shoes – even if it does make me a philistine.

  11. Chelsea Rae says:

This is such a “Holy Shit!” comment. I mean, would anyone really wear a hoof shoe but Lady Gaga or Daphne Guinness, no, but still…

Now, I can officially say that I’ve seen it all.

  12. HelOnWheels says:

This makes me very happy. I’m going to be wasting so much time at this museum, time that could be used productively. Thank you, SW.

That shoe museum website is incredibly addictive and I find the owner’s story pretty cool, too. Not to mention that Habraken really is a guy who collects and actually curates shoes, as in the proper art world term of someone who acquires, selects, keeps, organizes and categorizes objects. I feel people like him- who have a discernible passion and knowledge about shoes as cultural and artistic artifacts should recieve more attention from the fashion world then some girls (SoS or whatever her name is) who might or not have good taste but certainly have a lot of money to spend on shoes.
Sorry if I sounded a bit bitter, I am a trained and certified “museum nerd” and sometimes I care too much about this kind of stuff.

those fucking hoofs… gotta love it!

  15. Aja says:

Did you do a cartwheel of joy when you found this, Sister Wolf?

  16. Sister Wolf says:

Aja – If I hadn’t broken my pelvis and then my hip, I might have done a little dance at least. I think I just squealed.

  17. Aja says:

Oh jeez, I forget about that.

  18. Wendy says:

ok first I would like to say thanks for letting me know about the shoe museum <3

second (even tho I couldnt wear em) I like the hooves, like real hunters say 'leave no part unused'
