Band Lists

I’ve been looking for Max’s list of the bands he hated and I finally found it. He sent it in a comment to a post I’d written about stuff I love. How Maxlike of him!   Here’s his comment with the list:

Getting back to hatred for a minute, i coincidentally just compiled my own list of classic rock bands I hate. Before making this list, I thought of myself as a classic rock lover (Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Love, Doors, Velvets, Beach Boys, David Bowie, Neil Young, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, etc.) But now I am not so sure. I wouldn’t mind if the work of these “artists” was erased from existence:

A great list I think, very exhaustive. I’m on board with all of them. But as I read the list with a friend, I realized a glaring omission: What about Kiss?!?!?!?!?!   Is it because he didn’t consider them a classic rock band but more Metal??   I think it’s just an oversight that would make him smack his head in dismay.   The first question I’ll ask him when we meet among the stars out in the cosmos will be: “What about Kiss?!”

I love lists and Max did too.   My husband won’t have anything to do with lists.   It’s the one thing I would change about him.

I hate so many bands whose names I don’t know that I’ve stopped listening to the radio.   I hate the Strokes, for example. I hate every female singer/songwriter who sounds like Dido, so I just call them all Dido. I hate all music with that auto tune thing. I hate every new band I see on the David Letterman show. I hate bands with frantic overactive  front-men, or guitar players with funny hats.   I hate that guy Bruno Mars. I hate whatshername, the one whose boyfriend punched her in the face.

But I’m going to list my  all-time  favorite records and then I expect you to do the same.

Astral Weeks – Van Morrison
Forever Changes – Love
The Band – The Band
Burt Jansch – Burt Jansch
Grievous Angel – Gram Parsons

After these five, it would be too hard to choose.   I’d have to do a Top 50 and who needs that?

Okay, your turn.

  1. Pentagram – First Daze Here/First Daze Here Too
    Alice In Chains – Unplugged
Roky Erickson – I Think Of Demons
    Slayer – Reign In Blood
    Pulp – Pulp Hits

  2. And I agree with you on The Band xoxo

  3. Ahhhhh!! AND anything Otis Redding (except Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay… I HATE that one)

  4. Debbie says:

Otis Redding singing Try a Little Tenderness is amazing.

  5. Wow, that’s some list! Max must’ve been very particular about his music. The Who, seriously? I thought everyone liked The Who. I saw them in concert- unforgettable. And that was when they were “past their prime” (early 80s).

A few of my favorite albums…oh, this is hard but here goes:
    Morcheeba “Who Can You Trust”
Massive Attack “Mezzanine” (You must check out this group. I am a Massive Attack addict.)
Pink Floyd “The Wall” (Isn’t it on everyone’s list?) and “Dark Side of the Moon”
    Van Halen “Van Halen”
    Tool “10,000 Days”
    Moby “Play”
    Nirvana “Nevermind”
REM “Life’s Rich Pageant”…and most anything during their 80s heyday.
Rolling Stones…”Tattoo You” and everything before..after that, I lost interest.

    Okay, I’ll stop there.

    Fun post, SW.

  6. gene simmons says:

i hate that old dried up cunt, the one who´s son died

  7. Andra says:

    Pseudo gene simmons
Learn how and when apostrophes are used. And maybe capital letters.
    Wanker!

  8. muddy says:

this is literally impossible – but here is what comes to mind:

Frank Zappa – Burnt Weeny Sandwich

King Crimson – Lark’s Tongues in Aspic

Devo – Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!

Figurines – When the Deer Wore Blue

Grand Funk Railroad – Closer to Home

  9. JK says:

    Exile On Main Street
Whatever album Tupelo Honey is on
    Sorry Max – Abraxas
    Let It Bleed
    After The Gold Rush

(Of course these could all change if I took longer than the thirty seconds I just used.)

  10. Daniel Eaton says:

@gene simmons….Go to school! It’s “whose” not “who’s”. Even stupid people know that! What’s your excuse?

  11. Dexter VanDango says:

The best 5.. in order of magnificence:

    Forever Changes – Love

    Blonde on Blonde – Dylan

    The Doors first

    Sgt. Pepper – the Beatles

..a tie for 5th between Doc Watson and Tom Lehrer’s Great Hits

  12. Nadia says:

I definitely don’t see KISS as a classic rock band!

Don’t agree with some of the band on the list, but the majority are spot on!!!

As for favorite albums… (in no particular order)

    Motorhead – Ace of Spades
    Danzig – Danzig 2 Lucifuge
Lords of the New Church – Killer Lords
Beasts of Bourbon – Beyond Good and Evil
The Misfits – Walk Among Us
    Black Sabbath – Paranoid
Iggy & The Stooges – Raw Power

NO!!! I can’t even do this…. there are way too many, I could keep going forever and like them all just as much!

  13. TheShoeGirl says:

    In no order…

    DEVO- Oh No! It’s Devo
    The Smiths- Louder Than Bombs
The Rolling Stones- Hot Rocks (is that cheating cause it’s kind of a best-of?)
    Weezer- Pinkerton
    Air- Moon Safari

  14. Dexter VanDango says:

..and I insist that everyone get a copy of Carl Orff’s utterly original and soul-stirring Carmina Burana.. it will improve the quality of your life.

(..send me a sufficiently charming request and I may send you a copy – dex@dextervandango.com)

  15. That list was hilarious! I agree about so many of them – but I probably like individual songs and for years I had this absolute hatred of the Beatles. I’ve sort of grown out if it but maybe I should get back on board with it.

In response to the post I’ve tried to capture the songs that automatically pooped into my head

I just don’t know what to do with myself: Dusty Springfield
    London’s Calling: The Clash
    Wild Wood: Paul Weller
    Dakota: The Stereophonics
    the Passanger: Iggy Pop

I have Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana

I do love Massive Attack – I grew up with them in Bristol and still think they are the best band I’ve seen live, esp when they were the Wild Bunch
    xx

  16. Have realised how inspiring Max’s list is because I just remembered I hated Dylan and still do – there I’ve admitted it! I’ve come out LOUD & PROUD – thank you Max xx

  17. Kimberley says:

    London Calling- Clash
    Soldier- Iggy Pop
    Toxicity- System of a Down
    Sweets from a Stranger- Squeeze
    Broken English- Marianne Faithfull
    Audioslave- Audioslave

  18. Kimberley says:

    Oh, and
Songs in the Key of Life- Stevie Wonder

  19. RLC says:

Hahahaha I love that you call them all Dido (or Dildo as I have affectionately named her) – I do the same with Cat Power, although I am rather fond of the actual Cat Power. There just seem to be a lot of pretty girls who sing in breathy, strained voices as if it’s physically difficult for them to get the notes out. It is unbecoming.

I reckon that if I were locked in a room with only
    Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath
Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle by Bill Callahan
Leader of the Pack by the Shangri Las
I would never never never get tired or lonely 🙂

  20. RLC says:

OMG MAKE DO STYLE I detest Bob Dylan also! He just seemed like such a douche! And by all accounts, he was. There is a video from a documentary in which Joan Baez sings one of Dylan’s own songs to him while he sits with his back turned to her, banging on his typewriter, and each tap of the key is more heartbreaking than the last…I think it just encapsulates what a dickhead he was, to Baez and in general. I’ll try and find it.

    AHA! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXR0GIpJL7g

  21. Dexter VanDango says:

RLC, I respect Joan and Joni as wonderful human beings, great artists, and warriors for all that is good – but their voices are like gnats, mosquitoes, ultra-sonic bat squeeks.. not for human ears. Dylan probably had cotton in his.

  22. Andra says:

Bob Dylan was, and is, and always will be, pretentious crap.

  23. Dexter VanDango says:

Oh Andra.. you know not of what you speak.

Read the lyrics to With God On Our Side.. and then tell us who ever said such important things earlier or better? Dylan made the world a freer place to think and express ourselves. Before him it was June and Moon. He changed the world like nobody else in the 20th century.

  24. Sister Wolf says:

Bevitron – Max loved soul music too, He eve introduced me to singers I hadn’t heard of in that genre.

MyFriendsHouse – Yep. And Pet sounds would be in my top 10 of course.

Suspended- What’s Going On is such an amazing record, thanks for reminding me.

Audi – Nickleback is a solid choice for worst band. Even my teenager agrees on that.

Jaimi – I see I’ve got to listen to Golden Brown.

  25. Sister Wolf says:

Dru – I like Dire Straits! But not their radio hits.

Thriftshop lawyer – Pixies, check. Magnolia soundtrack, check. You have such a wide range, I’m jealous.

anna dc – We play alot of Curtis Mayfield and Nina Simone and Dylan in our house.

Taylor – Hahahaha, Max hated Kings of Leon, but I sort of like them, in a guilty way.

  26. tobilynne says:

Ah! You know I love lists!! How did he miss Kiss? They are, hands down, my least favorite band of all time. As far as top 5 (which mostly stay the same, but occasionally vary):

The Zombies – Odyssey and Oracle
Leonard Cohen – I’m Your Man
    David Bowie – Ziggy Stardust
    The Scientists – Swampland
And, of course, we share Love’s Forever Changes!

  27. Dru says:

Sister – I tried to like them as a teenager, because my town is classic-rock-mad and won’t listen to anything recorded after 1979 most days. I ended up coming to the conclusion that the first word of their name pretty much summed them up for me.

I’ll also join in the love for Massive Attack, if I didn’t have Air on my list they’d be it. I could listen to Mezzanine all day.

  28. Marky says:

I hate The Stone Temple Pilots so much that when they come on the radio in the car, I have to turn it off–no music–until I get to where I’m going. If I don’t do this, it’s bad luck.

  29. ellio100 says:

You know, there are a lot of good reasons to hate all the bands on Max’s list but for some reason I cannot outgrow my love for Bon Jovi. Whatever I do, like, learn, say or study my heart still races when their pop songs play. I feel like I ought to confess that I have stopped fighting it sister. Life is too short for me not to like what I like.

  30. Sister Wolf says:

elio100 – I used to like Bon Jovi’s hair, if that’s any consolation. xo

  31. Mary says:

Forever Changes is a great album. I agree with your sons list apart from: Eric Clapton, The Cult & Frank Zappa.

I find that at the ripe old age of 26, most music these days just sounds like a bad copy of something that has been done before. I hate ‘beige’ music with a passion & anything ‘whimsical’. Music has to have a good beat, be raw emotion or made with a computer or I just don’t want to hear.

    My top 5 are:

    Rainbow Bridge – Jimi Hendrix
    The Clash – The Clash
Let It Bleed – The Rolling Stones
Licensed To Ill – Beastie Boys
    LA Woman – The Doors

  32. Sister Wolf says:

Mary – Well said! I’m going to quote you — Your criteria for music is right on the money. Whimsical is one of the worst crimes, too. Ugh!

  33. kate says:

Sorry I’m late, but I really hate Creed.
