I’ve been looking for Max’s list of the bands he hated and I finally found it. He sent it in a comment to a post I’d written about stuff I love. How Maxlike of him! Here’s his comment with the list:
Getting back to hatred for a minute, i coincidentally just compiled my own list of classic rock bands I hate. Before making this list, I thought of myself as a classic rock lover (Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Love, Doors, Velvets, Beach Boys, David Bowie, Neil Young, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, etc.) But now I am not so sure. I wouldn’t mind if the work of these “artists” was erased from existence:

A great list I think, very exhaustive. I’m on board with all of them. But as I read the list with a friend, I realized a glaring omission: What about Kiss?!?!?!?!?! Is it because he didn’t consider them a classic rock band but more Metal?? I think it’s just an oversight that would make him smack his head in dismay. The first question I’ll ask him when we meet among the stars out in the cosmos will be: “What about Kiss?!”
I love lists and Max did too. My husband won’t have anything to do with lists. It’s the one thing I would change about him.
I hate so many bands whose names I don’t know that I’ve stopped listening to the radio. I hate the Strokes, for example. I hate every female singer/songwriter who sounds like Dido, so I just call them all Dido. I hate all music with that auto tune thing. I hate every new band I see on the David Letterman show. I hate bands with frantic overactive front-men, or guitar players with funny hats. I hate that guy Bruno Mars. I hate whatshername, the one whose boyfriend punched her in the face.
But I’m going to list my all-time favorite records and then I expect you to do the same.

Wow, that’s some list! Max must’ve been very particular about his music. The Who, seriously? I thought everyone liked The Who. I saw them in concert- unforgettable. And that was when they were “past their prime” (early 80s).

That list was hilarious! I agree about so many of them – but I probably like individual songs and for years I had this absolute hatred of the Beatles. I’ve sort of grown out if it but maybe I should get back on board with it.

Hahahaha I love that you call them all Dido (or Dildo as I have affectionately named her) – I do the same with Cat Power, although I am rather fond of the actual Cat Power. OMG MAKE DO STYLE I detest Bob Dylan also! He just seemed like such a douche! And by all accounts, he was. There is a video from a documentary in which Joan Baez sings one of Dylan’s own songs to him while he sits with his back turned to her, banging on his typewriter, and each tap of the key is more heartbreaking than the last…I think it just encapsulates what a dickhead he was, to Baez and in general. I’ll try and find it.

RLC, I respect Joan and Joni as wonderful human beings, great artists, and warriors for all that is good – but their voices are like gnats, mosquitoes, ultra-sonic bat squeeks.. not for human ears. Dylan probably had cotton in his.
Bob Dylan was, and is, and always will be, pretentious crap.
Oh Andra.. you know not of what you speak.
Read the lyrics to With God On Our Side.. and then tell us who ever said such important things earlier or better? Dylan made the world a freer place to think and express ourselves. Before him it was June and Moon. He changed the world like nobody else in the 20th century.
Bevitron – Max loved soul music too, He eve introduced me to singers I hadn’t heard of in that genre.

Audi – Nickleback is a solid choice for worst band. Even my teenager agrees on that.

Ah! You know I love lists!! How did he miss Kiss? They are, hands down, my least favorite band of all time. As far as top 5 (which mostly stay the same, but occasionally vary):

Sister – I tried to like them as a teenager, because my town is classic-rock-mad and won’t listen to anything recorded after 1979 most days. I ended up coming to the conclusion that the first word of their name pretty much summed them up for me.
I’ll also join in the love for Massive Attack, if I didn’t have Air on my list they’d be it. I could listen to Mezzanine all day.
I hate The Stone Temple Pilots so much that when they come on the radio in the car, I have to turn it off–no music–until I get to where I’m going. If I don’t do this, it’s bad luck.
You know, there are a lot of good reasons to hate all the bands on Max’s list but for some reason I cannot outgrow my love for Bon Jovi. Whatever I do, like, learn, say or study my heart still races when their pop songs play. I feel like I ought to confess that I have stopped fighting it sister. Life is too short for me not to like what I like.

Forever Changes is a great album. I agree with your sons list apart from: Eric Clapton, The Cult & Frank Zappa.
I find that at the ripe old age of 26, most music these days just sounds like a bad copy of something that has been done before. I hate ‘beige’ music with a passion & anything ‘whimsical’. Music has to have a good beat, be raw emotion or made with a computer or I just don’t want to hear.
